Detox to a New You

Summer is fast approaching and you are again asking yourself why you ate those extra helpings of
lechon (roast pig), puso (hanging rice), liempo (pork belly) baked ribs and balbacua (ox tail). You also
checked your calendar as to when you last visited the gym or climbed the stairs to your office on the 3rd
floor instead of taking the elevator. Finally, you may also be asking yourself how many glasses of water
you drank today. What you are feeling is most likely for having indulged yourself lately. You may also be
feeling heavy and easily out of breath now that you have those extra layers of fat lodged between your
skin and bones and are threatening to make permanent home.

If the above statements are true, it is then the perfect time for you to detox. There are several
definitions to detox and one of them is limiting your food intake or avoiding a specific type of food, so
that your body can get rid of toxins or “stuff” that your body doesn’t need. You can choose from several
ways to detox such as, sugar-free, protein power, carbs galore or fight with fat.

Sugar-free in detox means no sugar intake, at all, regardless of form such as flour products, natural
sugars or artificial sweeteners. These can cause increased cravings and you will feel the need to eat
more and more throughout the day. So, if you usually start your day with two to three cups of coffee
with a lot of milk and sugar or perhaps coffee creamer, then it is time to pause from this ritual. Instead,
for the duration of your detox, steer clear from that ever tempting and craved for sugar. For anyone not
interested in having a sugar free diet, you could always use a detox product like this instead.

Protein power is another way to detox. Fill yourself with protein at breakfast. Choose from nuts, eggs,
fish or chicken. Eating these will curb your hunger for the rest of the day, meaning you will feel less
hungry. A good protein portion to eat is 4 to 6 ounces or the size of your palm.

Try, also, carbs galore. A lot of diets restrict carbohydrates intake. In this case, carbs for detox is totally
acceptable. Carbs, though, would be vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, asparagus,
green beans, mushrooms, onions, zucchini, tomatoes, fennel, eggplant, pepper and artichokes. When
you eat the right kinds of carbs, you will get hungry less, you will be able to burn more calories and you
will feel more in control.

Finally, you can also fight fat with fat. Sounds great, right? The thing is fat is not what makes you fat.
Sugar is the culprit to that. So, if you include good fats in your meals such as nuts, seeds, extra virgin oil,
coconut butter and omega-3, you are able to fight sugar and kick it out of your body.

So, given all the choices, detox is really not too difficult or challenging. Choose the detox that will be
most comfortable with and stick with it. Let your body get rid of what it does not need, so you can come
energized, fresh and new.
